California, 1862-64
Ben Cotton spent the majority of the Civil War in California. He had two very important relationships with music publishers: D.C. Appleton, Montgomery St., San Francisco and M. Gray. Appleton printed songsters; Gray had a full catalogue that included song sheets and notated sheet music. The advertisment to the left, announcing an imminent release of new lyrics, appeared in the Daily Alta (San Francisco), March 12, 1863.
