The sheet music for Aggie Asthore was published by M. Gray in 1862, within six months of when Cotton arrived in San Francisco.  It may be the earliest of Cotton's publications.  It is surely the first of a string of his publications while in California between 1862 and 1864.  There are quite a few different versions of this song, with many variations of the spelling of the title as well as the verses.  Although Cotton himself had no known Irish ancestry, he worked with plenty of fellow minstrels who did.  M. Gray would continue to publish much of Cotton's music during this period, including a pair of songsters.
