Title

July 1, 1911 A

Subject

Lime Rock Light, Newport, R.I. showing Ida Lewis the only woman light house keeper in the world. Heroine of many brave rescues.

Description

Notes: Pasted into the space for the address is a tiny newspaper clipping: Ida Lewis, keeper of Lime Rock light in Newport harbor for more than half a century, died Tuesday night, following a stroke of apoplexy. She was the heroine of many thrilling rescues and was known the world over for her bravery, being frequently alluded to as the “Grace Darling of America.” On the clipping there is this handwritten date: October 24th, 1911 (Almost certainly Jennie (Cotton) Dunham’s handwriting). This card is clearly postmarked in July of 1911 but the day of the month has been arbitrarily selected.
