Husking bee:  interchangeable with "shucking bee," or less frequently, "shocking bee." A gathering of the agricultural community to help strip the husks from the harvested corn. Once the corn was dried, the kernels were removed from the cob.  No invitation was required to participate in these gatherings. The husking bees provided an important social function by bringing the community together, and enlivened the work. Music was a common accompaniment.
